When it comes to securing a university place in midwifery, it’s fair to say that the competition can be tough.

With her sights set on one of those coveted spots, Bede Sixth Form student Elin said she was keeping her feet firmly on the ground.

“I have always known that it’s a hard course to get on to, but it is something that I have wanted to do for years,” she said.

As it turned out the 18-year-old from Norton didn't need to worry as she secured not just one, but three conditional university offers.

“I was over the moon when I got the first one from The University of Manchester,” she said. “So, when I got the others as well, I didn’t expect it at all.”

With offers from Manchester, the University of Huddersfield and Northumbria University, Elin now gets to take her pick of where to go next.

“I don’t have a favourite at the moment,” she said. “I have a few online taster days that I will be doing online.”

Whichever she chooses it will no doubt move her a step closer to her dream career.

With the job in mind Elin chose to study Health and Social Care, Biology and Religion, Philosophy and Ethics at Bede. She said: “It’s something I have always been quite passionate about and as I got older and learned more about it, I loved it even more.”

She even made it the subject of her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), looking at the success of women and gender roles within midwifery.

While studying against a backdrop of Covid 19 restrictions, Elin’s Health and Social Care class was among the first to work on a unique project launched between the college and the University of North Tees.

Bede’s Health and Social Care Teacher, Jenny Wakefield, said: “I’m so proud of Elin, she is a brilliant student and even in what has been quite a challenging year she has done everything she can to get to where she wants to be. To get three university offers for midwifery at 18 is a fantastic achievement.”
