Introduction

Applied Human biology is a two-year course covering microbiology, infectious diseases, health issues, biomedical science and the key diagnostic techniques used by the NHS. The course has a large coursework component so is well-suited to independent learners and those who enjoy the hands-on approach to learning.

What do we study

You will learn about many common health issues, their diagnosis and their treatments. You will create NHS style documents detailing this information using facts you have independently researched. You will also carry out investigations into microorganisms, identifying them and suggesting how they can be treated.

How will I learn

You will be working towards one exam and four coursework assignments each year. This means lessons will be a mixture of classical teaching, independent research, creative tasks, laboratory experiments and report-writing.

What's next

Around 50,000 people employed are currently in applied health science occupations. The course leads to work in a range of settings including hospitals, private clinics, industry, research institutes and community healthcare.

What current students say

“The course linked really well with my other subjects.” “The coursework is really interesting and was fun to work on.” “I feel like Human Biology prepared me well for working in health care.”

What else do I need to know

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

You will be taught by an experienced specialist in science with backgrounds in all three subjects.
