Introduction

Criminology is about crime and punishment. It is an exciting interdisciplinary subject that combines aspects of law, psychology, sociology and biology. It explores how crime is defined, why people commit crimes, and how society responds to crime. Studying criminology will allow you to understand the culture of crime and the workings of the criminal justice system, including the police, courts, prosecution services, prisons and rehabilitation services.

What do we study

You’ll cover topics like: the changing awareness of crime, perceptions of crime, why some crimes go unreported, criminological theories, crime scene to courtroom, and crime and punishment.

How will I learn

Learning activities are varied and diverse to reflect the nature of the subject. Lessons activities include debates, designing campaign materials, group work, project management and practical research activities. You will have the opportunity to analyse a range of case studies and real-life crime scenarios.

What's next

Studying criminology will enable you to develop skills that are vital to all careers, including independent working, communication skills, problem solving, and research skills. Students could go on to study Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Law or similar subjects in higher education.
