Well done to Zakiyya who is celebrating results day success today.

The 18-year-old from Thornaby achieved an A in history and Bs in art and design and maths.

“I’m quite happy and proud of myself,” she said, with a university offer now in the bag.

Off to study economics and business management at Newcastle University, she said: “I was feeling a little nervous about my results but also excited.”

After learning through the lockdowns and meeting the unexpected challenges of the last two years, she can reflect with optimism.

She said: “It [the pandemic] has made things harder but I think we have also come out of it as a more resilient year group.”

Looking back at her time at Bede, former St Patrick’s Catholic College pupil Zakiyya said: “It has been amazing, fun but also difficult at the same time.”

Offered the opportunity to work with a mentor as part of the college’s initiative with The Girls’ Network, she said she has learnt many additional valuable lessons.

She said: “I have come away from Bede with better friends and a better view of the world.”
