Introduction

Are you considering a profession in law? This course is an excellent opportunity to gain a hands-on insight into how the law operates in practice. Looking at both aspects of criminal and civil law, you will learn about various processes, including procedures at the police station, and how criminal trials and personal injury claims work.

What do we study

You will learn about the different types of courts and the cases that are dealt with in those courts, including both criminal and civil cases. We will look at the different sources of law and how laws are developed through the courts and parliament and how they are interpreted by the judiciary. You will also discover the powers that the police have in relation to arrest and detention, and the legal principles surrounding those areas of law.

How will I learn

We make our lessons as interactive as possible. We use video tutorials, conduct mock trials, and organise visits to places like the local magistrates courts, to supplement our learning in the classroom. You will learn how the law applies to everyday situations and will need to advise fictional clients on the strengths and weaknesses of their case in criminal and civil law. As part of your coursework you will build a portfolio of evidence relating to life related cases.

What's next

Learning the law can lead to a number of highly paid careers, for example, lawyer, tax consultant, or chartered town planner. Some of our recent students have gone on to university to complete a law degree or have entered the legal profession through legal apprenticeships. Some students have gone to work with the police and public services.

What current students say

“BTEC law has given me a hands on experience in what it would be like working in a law firm and dealing with client issues.” “Law has helped me develop my research skills which has helped me in all of my other subjects as well.” “The staff helped me realise that law was what I wanted to do. I am now working in a law firm doing my dream job thanks to the law department.”
