Course overview
Are you passionate about maths? Studying Further Mathematics will offer you the chance to excel in a subject you love and are good at. Challenging your logic and reasoning skills, it will further develop your knowledge, giving you an understanding of a range of pure and applied topics.
Building on the work carried out in A level Maths, you will develop an expertise in pure and applied maths, learning how to apply different mathematical concepts and seeing how they relate to each other.
Course information
This course follows Edexcel A Level Further Mathematics is assessed by examination. You will complete four exams at the end of Year 2.
This course will help prepare you for university courses with a high mathematical content such as mathematics, physics, engineering and computing – over 50% of students on these courses at university have studied Further Mathematics. Future careers could involve engineering, accountancy and finance, and most STEM related careers. Some of our most recent students have gone on to study Mathematics at the University of Leeds and University of Liverpool, as well as Mechanical Engineering at Newcastle University.
Grades 9-4 in seven GCSEs (AGCSE 5.00 – 5.50) plus Grade 7 in GCSE Maths, Grade 8 strongly recommended.
Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

You need to bring a scientific calculator with features developed for the new A level to lessons. The Casio ClassWiz FX-991EX is a good example of a calculator with the features required.
A mixture of learning strategies will be used in your studies, including problem-solving activities, group work, independent work, use of ICT and support using various web sites to allow you to maximise your potential.
