Course overview
By practicing philosophy, humanity is able to ask itself the most profound questions relating to life on earth. How should we live? How can we decide what is the right thing to do? Does God exist? How can we make sense of our most intense experiences? How do we know what is real? Many people don’t want to consider these questions but if you take Religion, Philosophy and Ethics then you are different – you are willing to open your mind and consider really deep questions.
You’ll look at key questions of philosophy and theology through discussions, question and answer sessions, activities and debate. You’ll be challenged to think critically not only about other people’s beliefs but also your own, developing the ability to logically appraise.
Course information
This course is 100% examination based. You will complete three exams at the end of Year 2.
After this course you could go on to study subjects like philosophy, religious studies, politics or literature at university. Future careers could include working as a charity officer, counsellor, teacher, youth worker, in the civil service or as a journalist. Some of our most recent students have gone on to study Humanities at Northumbria University, Philosophy at the University of Roehampton.
Grades 9-4 in seven GCSEs (AGCSE 5.00 – 5.50) plus Grade 5 in GCSE English Language strongly recommended.
Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

Through classroom activities, discussions, questions and answer sessions, and practice of exam based questions. We also watch and analyse clips from film and TV which raise ethical and philosophical questions.
