Course overview
If you love literature, this course will give you a great excuse to read to your heart’s content! Then you can indulge yourself by discussing, thinking and writing about what you have read. This course offers something for every avid reader; you will examine great works of English Literature from the Romantic period through to the present day.
During the course you will read and study eight texts, including Othello, Death of a Salesman, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Kite Runner, and a collection of poems by John Keats and William Blake.
Course information
You will take two exams at the end of your second year. You will complete your coursework folder during the first term of your second year of study.
English Literature is a subject that leads into and supports many different careers. Students go on to study a wide range of degrees; a degree in English can lead to careers that are related to the fields of Law, Media, Administration; Publishing; Health Care; Education and the Leisure industry. Former students have gone on to study a range of degrees. Leal is now at Glasgow University doing English literature; both Lily and Eve have gone to Nottingham University: Eve to study English and Creative Writing, Lily to study American Studies and History; Melissa went to Durham to study Law.
Grades 9-4 in seven GCSEs (AGCSE 5.00 – 5.50)
Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

Alternatively, you can find a hard copy of our application form at the back of our prospectus. Complete this and post it back to us, or hand it in at our Reception.
We will provide you with copies of the texts required. You may want to buy your own copies so that you can annotate them. You will need to equip yourself with stationery items and invest in recommended study guides.
We will explore literature through paired, group and individual tasks, designed to allow you to achieve a detailed understanding and appreciation of the texts. You will learn to research and present topics to small and large groups and write up your research for essay tasks, including choosing two texts for your coursework.
