Course overview
The UK’s creative industries are now worth a record £101.5 billion to the UK economy, and Art & Design is a subject that could lead to a well-paid and fulfilling career in the arts. This course offers you the chance to explore your own creativity, develop your ideas, think critically, and learn to express yourself artistically with growing expertise. There is no greater satisfaction than being absorbed in the creative process, and the course is tailored to provide you with this experience.
This course is very rewarding and gives you the opportunity to express yourself imaginatively and creatively, using a whole range of different media. You will develop a range of skills in relation to drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media. Following the art process from your initial research and starting points through to development and experimentation, you will produce a body of work for each unit. Alongside this you will research a range of relevant artists to gain inspiration and visit relevant exhibitions.
Course information
Your work will be assessed formatively on a regular basis and you will be given a working grade once every half term, based on criteria provided by the AQA. Your first project, worth 60%, is assessed in February. your second project, worth 40%, is based on a theme provided by the exam board and will be completed in a 10-15 hour time period in May.
Future careers could include graphic design, interior design, creative direction, product design, film and TV set design, and many more. Some of our most recent students have gone on to study Fashion Journalism at Manchester University, Fine Art at Newcastle University, Games Design at Teesside University, Fashion Journalism at University of Arts London, Architecture at Northumbria University, and Interior Design at the University of Brighton.
Grades 9-4 in seven GCSEs (AGCSE: 5.00 -5.50) plus grade 5 in GCSE Art, Graphics or Textiles (linear course)
Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

We will provide you with as many materials as possible, but there may be specialist items that you acquire yourself.
Taught via interactive workshops, during the six week induction period you will learn how to analyse the work of artists and how to use this to inspire and develop your own work. You will learn how to generate ideas through games and audio visual presentations, and receive guided workshops on key skills like drawing, printing, mark making, mixed media and photography. For the remainder of the course you will learn through twice weekly one-to-one tutorials in which we will discuss and assess the quality and direction of your work and make improvements where necessary.
