Course overview
Psychology is the scientific study of minds and behaviour. As such, it is a part of our everyday lives. An understanding of human behaviour is fundamental to many jobs in society and the study of psychology at degree level and beyond remains a very popular choice. If you are interested in studying this subject in a more practical, hands on way, BTEC Applied Psychology offers you this opportunity.
You will explore the diverse nature of Psychology as a subject whilst also exploring how to conduct psychological research to help you understand what people do and why. In your first year you will study units on psychological approaches and applications and conducting psychological research. In your second year you will build on this knowledge and link it to real world applications, including health psychology and one other unit from forensic psychology, child developmental psychology, psychopathology and applied sports psychology.
Course information
In your first year you will complete two units. The first unit, Psychological Approaches and Applications, is an external exam sat in January. You will also complete a piece coursework in which you plan, design and carry out a piece of psychological research based on your earlier study of the psychological approaches. Second year follows the same format of exam and coursework.
The BTEC in Applied Psychology is ideal for any student aiming to study Psychology, or related subjects such as Criminology, Sociology, Health, Sports Science and mental health nursing at university.
Grades 9-4 in seven GCSEs (AGCSE 4.50 – 5.00) plus Grade 4 in GCSE English and GCSE Maths.

Applied Psychology lessons are engaging and interactive. You will learn through a variety of teaching and learning activities including independent research, group work, creative activities, planning and designing your own psychological research studies and application of your knowledge to specialist branches and professions within Psychology.
