Introduction

By practicing philosophy, humanity is able to ask itself the most profound questions relating to life on earth. How should we live? How can we decide what is the right thing to do? Does God exist? How can we make sense of our most intense experiences? How do we know what is real? Many people don’t want to consider these questions but if you take Religion, Philosophy and Ethics then you are different – you are willing to open your mind and consider really deep questions.

What do we study

You’ll look at key questions of philosophy and theology through discussions, question and answer sessions, activities and debate. You’ll be challenged to think critically not only about other people’s beliefs but also your own, developing the ability to logically appraise.

How will I learn

Through classroom activities, discussions, questions and answer sessions, and practice of exam based questions. We also watch and analyse clips from film and TV which raise ethical and philosophical questions.

What's next

After this course you could go on to study subjects like philosophy, religious studies, politics or literature at university. Future careers could include working as a charity officer, counsellor, teacher, youth worker, in the civil service or as a journalist. Some of our most recent students have gone on to study Humanities at Northumbria University, Philosophy at the University of Roehampton.

What else do I need to know

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

RPE develops the crucial skills of critical thinking – the ability to logically appraise opinions, arguments and conclusions. This ability is in high demand in all areas of industry and employment.

Philosophy as a field of study helps you develop essential skills, and as such taking this course is beneficial for many other courses, ranging from physics to sociology to English literature.

A high number of globally successful people studied philosophy, like Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons; singer Lana Del Ray; Pope John Paul II; famous film directors the Coen Brothers; comedian Ricky Gervais; and president Bill Clinton.
