Introduction

Do you have the discipline and determination it takes to work in the uniformed public service industries? Find out by signing up to one of our courses. Focusing on key services including fire and rescue, the police, ambulance, prison services, customs and excise and the armed forces you’ll be given a realistic introduction to what working life is really like in the uniformed services and get the skills to prepare you for this type of work. Alongside your studies, you can also complete the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

What do we study

Lessons include a mix of classroom based study and outdoor activities, expeditions and group work. You’ll learn about the demands of working in the different public service industries, improving health and fitness, outdoor activities as well as communication skills, team work and time management.

How will I learn

You will learn through a range of practical units followed by opportunities to practice and develop skills and experience outside of the classroom environment, including residential Public Services ‘look at life’ trips, adventure activity courses and other educational trips.

What's next

This course opens up a wide range of possibilities for you, including going on to university or directly into working in the public services. Some of our previous students have gone on to join the British Army, Royal Signals, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Fire Service. Other students have gone on to university to study Policing and Paramedic Science and work in the outdoor adventure industry.

What current students say

“Students get as many opportunities as possible, and all of the things we learned on the course have helped in some way.” “The expeditions that we took part in were challenging, but the teamwork and determination we learnt has stuck with me.” “Taking part in things like the Remembrance Day parade and tactical training experiences with the police and fire service have all helped with my organisation.” “Garreth has two phrases from the armed forces that he uses a lot: “Cheerfulness in the face of adversity”, and “Improvise, adapt, overcome”. I use those all the time, changing the plan when I need to both in the fast-paced environment at work and in my own life.”
