Introduction

The FdA in Law and Practice is designed to provide learners with a solid foundation in law and legal services within the English Legal System. Potential graduates will develop skills which are necessary to deal with current legal issues in a practical way across a wide variety of legal areas including, but not limited to, criminal law and litigation, contract, tort and civil litigation and land and conveyancing. The course has been designed with flexibility in mind, allowing potential graduates to continue with their study programme by topping up to Teesside University Main Campus to complete their LLB Hons Degree. There will also be opportunities for learners to become members of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and complete a professional paralegal qualification alongside their degree, increasing the employability skills of our graduates

What do we study

The FdA in Law and Practice will consist of a variety of modules including legal foundations, tort law, criminal law, land law and more. Learners will also embark on practical modules such as criminal litigation, civil litigation and conveyancing where they will apply the relevant areas of law in a practical manner. Learners will also complete modules relating to practical legal skills, such as client care, legal research, mooting and debating. In your second year, learners will be able to choose optional modules which include wills and probate and family law and practice.

How will I learn

You will learn through a variety of methods such as interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will also receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments. You will experience different learning techniques to ensure the needs of each learner are met.

What's next

Graduates will be able to top up to Teesside University to complete their LLB (Hons) in Law in order to achieve their qualifying law degree. This can take up to an additional two-years to complete. Alternatively, learners may wish to top up to the BSC (Hons) in Law which will take one year to complete.Those learners who wish to go straight in to practice may wish to top up onto our CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ) or apply for a Higher-Level Legal Apprenticeship. 

What else do I need to know

You will be assessed by a mixture of external examinations and written coursework. You will sit exams in January and June in any one academic year. The course will be delivered on a weekly basis with timetables issued at the start of the academic year. You will only be required to attend during the timetabled sessions, however, it is advised to use the college facilities during your free periods. The cost of the course is £6,150 per year. If you are paying for your course, the College can arrange for an upfront payment in full or set up a payment plan. If You Are Studying For A Teesside University Award You may be eligible for a student loan from the Student Loan Company (SLC) to cover the cost of fees. Students on full-time programmes can also apply to the SLC for a maintenance loan to help with your living costs. You will only start repaying your tuition fee and maintenance loans once you’ve left your course and your income is over £27,295* per year.
