Introduction

A Level Physical Education will appeal to those students who: • Have a keen interest in sport and are regularly involved in competitive performance • Want to develop knowledge and understanding of the scientific factors that underpin performance in sport • Want to analyse, evaluate and improve their own sporting performance

What do we study

A Level Physical Education brings together a fascinating range of topics, such as: • Human anatomy • Exercise physiology • Biomechanical movement • Specialist training • Sport psychology • Skill, learning and performance • Sport and society • Technology in sport You will also take part in practical sports activities and have your performance assessed in one sport. This assessment will take place in the full sided version and in a competitive situation. There are guest speakers embedded into the delivery of the course which gives an insight into the careers you can go into. There are also opportunities to go on University trips that have been selected for their excellent reputation for Sport and Exercise degrees and/or sport performance.

How will I learn

You will learn through a combination of classroom-based theory lessons and practical learning activities such as investigations into the acute effects of exercise. You will complete regular topic tests to assess your knowledge and enhance your learning. This is a consistent theme to ensure maximum preparation for the examination series.

What's next

The course is designed to support progression to University. Students wanting to continue the study of Physical Education will have options to study degrees in Sports Science, Physiotherapy or Teaching amongst many others. When selected with other appropriate A Levels, it can support progression to degrees in Medicine and Dentistry. Some students with exceptional performance levels can pursue scholarships at Universities in the UK or USA.

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.
