Introduction

Are you passionate about maths? Studying Further Mathematics will offer you the chance to excel in a subject you love and are good at. Challenging your logic and reasoning skills, it will further develop your knowledge, giving you an understanding of a range of pure and applied topics.

What do we study

Building on the work carried out in A level Maths, you will develop an expertise in pure and applied maths, learning how to apply different mathematical concepts and seeing how they relate to each other.

How will I learn

A mixture of learning strategies will be used in your studies, including problem-solving activities, group work, independent work, use of ICT and support using various web sites to allow you to maximise your potential.

What's next

This course will help prepare you for university courses with a high mathematical content such as mathematics, physics, engineering and computing – over 50% of students on these courses at university have studied Further Mathematics. Future careers could involve engineering, accountancy and finance, and most STEM related careers. Some of our most recent students have gone on to study Mathematics at the University of Leeds and University of Liverpool, as well as Mechanical Engineering at Newcastle University.

What current students say

"It has been very fun studying Further Mathematics with the classroom atmosphere being enjoyable.” “By being shown how new mathematical concepts work and then discussing their applications with other students has made it a great way to understand the subject." “It is hard work but has been worthwhile. Although not required, you definitely have an advantage with the latest Graphical Calculator (Casio CG50).”

What else do I need to know

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

To get high grades. Students who take Further Mathematics find that the additional time spent studying maths improves their skills leading to excellent grades in A level Maths.
To be empowered – studying this subject is challenging but students overwhelmingly find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering experience.
During their studies, students can enter the Senior Maths Challenge, a national competition that takes place in November each year. We also organise visits to local universities to learn more about studying maths in higher education.
