Introduction

If you love literature, this course will give you a great excuse to read to your heart's content! Then you can indulge yourself by discussing, thinking and writing about what you have read. This course offers something for every avid reader; you will examine great works of English Literature from the Romantic period through to the present day.

What do we study

During the course you will read and study eight texts, including Othello, Death of a Salesman, The Handmaid's Tale, The Kite Runner, and a collection of poems by John Keats and William Blake.

How will I learn

We will explore literature through paired, group and individual tasks, designed to allow you to achieve a detailed understanding and appreciation of the texts. You will learn to research and present topics to small and large groups and write up your research for essay tasks, including choosing two texts for your coursework.

What's next

English Literature is a subject that leads into and supports many different careers. Students go on to study a wide range of degrees; a degree in English can lead to careers that are related to the fields of Law, Media, Administration; Publishing; Health Care; Education and the Leisure industry. Former students have gone on to study a range of degrees. Leal is now at Glasgow University doing English literature; both Lily and Eve have gone to Nottingham University: Eve to study English and Creative Writing, Lily to study American Studies and History; Melissa went to Durham to study Law.

What else do I need to know

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

We get excellent results! We have had an A-level pass rate of 100% for the last two years and for A/S level the last three years.

We also go on theatre trips and to supplement the course. Previous trips include visits to London to see Dr Faustus, an RSC live screening of Othello in College, trips to Newcastle to see The Kite Runner and Othello and a trip to Liverpool to see Othello.

Dedicated teachers who offer lots of support and enrichment, including the opportunity to enter creative writing competitions.
