Introduction

There’s never been a more relevant time to study Economics. Our future as a nation and our place in the world is changing rapidly and issues like ‘Brexit’ and the emergence of new economic super-powers like China is impacting on us all. This course will encourage you to consider all the factors that affect standards of living and the quality of life for different parts of society. Economics is all around us, and a sound understanding of economic principles will give you very useful skills. By studying this subject you will be able to evaluate the state of the nation and consider solutions to our current financial and economic problems.

What do we study

Economics is essentially the study of who gets what, so on this course you’ll look at the allocation of jobs, wealth and resources in both the UK and on a worldwide scale. We will also look at how the course relates to other subjects like history, geography, politics and sociology. There will be elements of Economics within all humanities and most social science courses and it will complement many of these subjects.

How will I learn

Learning is dynamic and participatory, and in our lessons we analyse and suggest solutions to the economic problems of the day.

What's next

Future careers could include management, international business, marketing, or even launching your own business. Some of our most recent students have gone on to study Economics at Northumbria University, Business and Marketing at Northumbria University, Accounting and Finance at Teesside University, Business Management at Leeds Beckett University, and Geography at Northumbria University.

What else do I need to know

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and maths alongside your other courses. These are essential skills that all employers value.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the economic factors that affect our everyday lives, and be able to explain these things to others!

You will be able to hold to account and question politicians, business leaders and decision makers with confidence and knowledge.

There are many opportunities to participate in discussion and debate within the College and wider community, and former students have been invited to appear in local media interviews and events.
